23 Sep – Cae Glas v Harpers

The final game of the 2017 season was played under murky skies on a very damp wicket has Cae Glas played host to Harpers, who were third in the table hoping for a win and a chance of promotion.

Cae Glas won the toss and elected to bowl in this 35 over match and started positively with Gary Davies and Shaun Southern bowling tightly, supported by some excellent work in the field. At the half way stage Harpers were struggling to score at 2 runs an over with two wickets already down. The introduction of spin by Nick Broadbent and leg spin by Barry Richards continued to strangle the normally aggressive nature of the Harpers batsmen and this, alongside four tight overs from Gaz Edgerton ensured Harpers posted a very modest score of 93 for the loss of 8 wickets. Pick of the Harpers batsmen was M.Gupta who topscored with 18

Gary Davies, Nick Broadbent, Gaz Edgerton and Barry Richards all took 2 wickets apiece.

Although only having to chase 94 for the win, Cae Glas knew the task wasn’t going to be easy, and so it proved with Harpers starting as Cae Glas had done, with some accurate bowling to restrict regular openers Andy Griffiths and Ian ‘Toothy’ Holgate. The first wicket fell with 20 runs scored however skipper George Candler, alongside Andy Griffiths, managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over and put on a valuable 46 partnership before Candler fell for 20, and in so doing surpassing 500 runs for the season. There was still work to do, but Ben Hipkiss added a valuable 11 to edge the hosts ever closer to the winning score. Although the home team then lost a few quick wickets in the run chase, Andy Griffiths remained unbeaten on 37 not out to see the team home with 5 balls to spare in this very tight final game of the season.

Pick of the Harpers bowlers was Masih who took 2 for 9.

The result ended a good season for Cae Glas who won 12, drew 1 and lost 9 of their 22 matches to finish 7th in the league. And unusually, not one match was rained off!
