This week the seconds took the short journey to Oswestry School to take on local rivals Oswestry IV.
On another sweltering Saturday afternoon, the Glas were not disappointed when asked to bat and reached 227 for 3 from their 45 overs – thanks to two substantial partnerships: an opening one of 86 between Nick Chesters (42) and George Candler (85 not out) and , after the loss of three quick wickets, an undefeated fourth wicket stance of 128 between Candler and Tim Morris (61 not out). For Oswestry, there were two wickets for young spinner Xavier Clarke (2 for 40).
In reply, Oswestry got off to a solid start with 51 on the board before the loss of their first wicket. However, once the opening partnership had been broken, wickets fell at regular intervals to leave them all out for 114. There were four wickets each for Shaun Southern (4 for 42) and Gavin Porritt (4 for 3 off 5 overs), who cleaned up the tail, and some excellent work in the field with two good catches for Simon Wood and three catches behind the stumps for George Candler. For Oswestry, Jim Phillips top scored with 34.
In summary, a terrific local derby, in beautiful weather and played in an exemplary spirit throughout.
