Players past and present recalled days gone by as Cae Glas cricketrs hosted the Saxons – a select Evening League XI , to mark our 60th anniversary on Thursday 10th July.
The thrilling game at Gatacre, which we lost by just 6 runs, was watched by a number of veterans who played in the 1953 season and later in the following decade. These included Colin Perkins, Peter Richards, Pat Humby and Peter Humphreys. Pete, as you all know, is patron of the Club whilst June, his wife, is our President.
The Saxons won the toss and elected to bat first. Charlie Haylett top-scored with a fine 58 and Mark Davies (31) put bat to ball as the team amassed a challenging total of 168 -5. Tom Jones was the most productive Cae Glas bowler with figures of 2 – 16.
In reply, the Glas began disastrously with wickets falling quickly, such was the size of the challenge. However, Ruch Nimantha, with a sparkling 31, and man of the match, Tom Jones with 67, pushed the Saxons all the way before falling just 6 runs short of their target as we ran out of overs and closed on 162 – 8.
A lovely sunny evening’s cricket was enjoyed by all, as players past and present reflected on years gone by with fond affection!
