Cae Glas were back at Gatacre hosting promotion chasing Hodnet, Peplow and Tibberton in a match that at midday looked like being called off due to the heavy rain that had fallen that morning. However the sun came out and the match was able to get going slightly later than planned, with Cae Glas winning the toss and electing to bowl.
Prior to the game starting, both sets of sides paid their respects and observed a minutes silence following the sad loss of Mike Robinson, a former skipper of the club, who’d passed away 48 hours earlier.
The visitors had a number of big hitters in the side and were soon scoring at 5 an over for the first 15 overs. Although a number of the Hodnet batsmen did start to compile an innings, the Cae Glas bowlers persevered and supported by some excellent fielding, managed to take wickets at important times.
Simon Dean making his debut for the 1st team took 2 for 21 and was ably supported by Gary Davies and Nick Broadbent who also took 2 wickets. Andy Hughes and Shaun Southern also chipped in with one apiece to limit Hodnet, Peplow and Tibberton to 156 for 8 in 34 overs.
Harry Fiaz top scored for Hodent with 28.
Cae Glas started positively in reply with openers Andy Griffiths and Ian Holgate keeping the scoreboard ticking over. However 3 wickets fell for just 7 runs to put the advantage back with the visitors, who as a result tightened their grip on the game as they went for the win. Ben Hipkiss and Bobby Phillips then steadied matters with Ben eventually top scoring with 21. Gary Davies also chipped in with 19 to frustrate their hosts, and although Cae Glas lost their 9th wicket in the last over of the match, the experienced Nick Broadbent, with virtually every fielder close-in around him, held out for the final 4 balls to ensure Cae Glas recorded their first draw of the season, with Cae Glas finishing on 104 for 9.
Pick of the Hodnet bowlers was Matt Watkins who returned figures of 3 for 26.
Next Saturday Cae Glas go on their travels to play their final away match of the season at Ludlow.
