A single wicket was all that came between Cae Glas II and The SCCL Reserve Three league title as they ended their 2013 campaign with a winning draw at third placed Bomere Heath II.
On a green top, Cae Glas, needing the maximum 24 points to be sure of the title, elected to bat. That decision was looking a brave one as opener Nick C was soon back in the pavilion without a run on the board. Tight bowling from the home side, together with the enormity of the outfield and some nervousness between the wickets – which resulted in three run outs – contributed to what felt, at the time, to be a disappointing total of 139 for 9 from their allotted overs.
Not for the first time in recent weeks Gavin top scored with 37 and there were further useful contributions from George (26), Tim S (17) and Woody (17). Wheatland Indoor League young player of the year Harry Bolland took 2 for 34 and Andy McIlroy took 1 for 9 from 15 impressive overs for Bomere.
It soon became apparent that the total posted was a more than useful target as our hosts struggled to get going and, in a repeat of earlier events, they too found themselves a man down before scoring a run. However a dogged 38 from Matt Jones was the highlight as, despite being a little off the pace, they looked to be comfortably holding on for a draw with two wickets down and only thirteen overs remaining.
Dave Smith, however, returning for his second spell, had other ideas. In a devastating spell of bowling, he took five wickets (6 for 18 in total) and had four deliveries to remove Bomere’s last batter. Alas, it wasn’t to be and Bomere held on to finish on 102 for 9.
In the end The Glas must reflect on a wonderful summer of cricket, where all 22 matches were completed in, at times, true summer weather and played in an exemplary spirit throughout, in the knowledge that finishing runners-up is an achievement that we should all be proud of.
