This week, Ludlow IV made the long journey up to the north of the county and, with bad weather due later in the day, were asked to bat on another good Gatacre track and with the outfield getting quicker by the hour.
The visitors made a cautious start and, with wickets in hand, might have been a little disappointed with their 188 for 4 from their 45 overs. Jack Small top-scored with 66 and Simon Miles was left undefeated on 49. Despite the shortage of wickets, the home attack provided tight bowling throughout, with two wickets falling to Dave Smith and one each to Nick Chesters and the ever-dependable Shaun Southern.
In reply, all batters made their contribution, but the home side found partnerships difficult to establish. After losing our ninth wicket on the last ball of the penultimate over, the Glas found themselves needing two runs to win with six balls remaining and all results possible. A scampered single then brought the scores level only for the unfortunate Danny Bradley (4 for 34) to bowl a ‘wide’ with three balls remaining.
For The Glas, Pete Bowyer kept up his recent good form, top-scoring with 42, Simon Wood hit 37 and Aidan Martyn smashed his way to 27. For Ludlow Simon Miles capped off a good day personally with three wickets to add to the runs he made earlier.
This was a great game of cricket that went ‘right to the wire’ and , despite the tense atmosphere at the end , was played in an exemplary spirit throughout.
