The firsts endured a nail biting end to their Division 2 game against Shrewsbury 3rds at Gatacre on Saturday.
In glorious sunshine Shrewsbury won the toss and elected to bat. Despite good bowling from the Cae Glas attack, the visitors progressed steadily to a creditable 225 for 3 in their 45 overs, thanks largely to 113 not out from Johnson, who only gave one chance in his 70’s in what otherwise was a chanceless knock, and 56 not out from Pym, who made the most of some uncharacteristic sloppy catching in the energy sapping heat.
In reply, the loss of Ben H and Ian Toothy early on didn’t make for the best of starts, but Ruch returned to form spectacularly as he built a partnership of 86 with Andy G and then a 97 with Gaz as the game turned in our favour.
Griffer contributed 24 before chopping on and Gaz 29.
Ruch took the total to 201 before being caught for a magnificent 110 as Cae Glas closed in on the total.
An England style batting collapse then followed as Cae Glas handed the initiative back to the opposition as they imploded – from 201 for 4 to lose 5 wickets for 10 runs. Tail end number 11 and ‘rabbit’ Tom Gardner was left to face the final 2 balls against his old team, requiring 2 to win and one to tie.
But there was no fairy tale ending for Tom as both his shots went straight to fielders so the Cae Glas innings closed on 224 for 9 as the game finished in a draw.
Cae Glas – 15 points and Shrewsbury – 19 in a game they should have won at a canter.
