This week Cae Glas 2nd XI made it three wins in a row with an emphatic home victory by 52 runs over visitors ,Forton II.
Asked to bat on a ‘green top’ at Gatacre, batting was never going to be easy and so it proved, with The Glas standing at 15 for 1 after 15 of their 45 overs thanks to the bowling of Forton opener Sahil Masih who conceded only 4 runs from his first 10 overs and ended the day with 2 for 20.
Nevertheless , the home side had wickets in hand and this proved invaluable as George Candler (27) held the innings together and then Aidan Martyn (17), Tim Smith (37) and Murrel Morris (18) were able to apply the acceleration that allowed The Glas to finish on a respectable 136 for 7.
In reply, Forton soon found the going tough against an attack that is finding a consistent quality from week to week. All the home bowlers produced an accuracy that prevented Forton from ever cementing any serious assault on their target, and conceding only three wides in nearly 41 overs in the process.
John Clarke led the way with 4 for 18 from 15 miserly overs and skipper Barry Vaughan (3 for 15) removed the last three batters to take the victory, but all bowlers were outstanding and were greatly assisted by some spectacular work in the field including a marvellous pick up and throw ‘run-out’ from Shaun ‘Jonty’ Southern.
