It wasn’t the warmest of days, but our annual President’s Day gave the warmest of welcomes to spectators and players alike.
Batting first, the Club side made an excellent start with two half centuries (51 and 53 respectively) being posted by openers Simon Wood and Aidan Martyn. Both retired not out, making way for Nathan Barthram and Andy Carter who added almost 40 runs between them. For the President’s side, Tim Morris and Hugh Roberts mopped up more than half the wickets. A final total of 176 runs after 35 overs looked like a competitive run chase would be on.
The aim was then to get the Club side to eat as much as humanly possible in order to slow them down in the field! Thanks to June, our President, for funding the best cricket tea ever put on – and thanks to Tracey, ably assisted by her team – Robyn, Saffron and Travis for all the hard work involved in making and serving it. Quiche, chicken, sausage rolls, pizza and assorted salads were all washed down with a glass or two from Peter’s keg of beer!
The strategy worked…..The President’s men had time to sit down and digest their teas, leaving the Club men slightly sluggish in the field. Not so old timer, Gary ‘Gunner’ Daniels, who’d arrived sporting shorts and a vest. His pacey bowling claimed 3 wickets in the middle orderwith captain, Aidan Martyn, doing the early damage with his 3 wickets. Mark Jones, batting at No. 2, notched up 32; Tim Morris showed considerable fire power with his 47 not out, whilst Nige Evans ALMOST got his half century but was denied by a stunning catch from Deb Hipkiss on 49. Better luck next year Nige!
Thanks to one and all for a great day’s cricket, but especially to June and Pete for their loyal and enduring support for the Club they love.
