Welshpool v Cae Glas I – 24 May

Cae Glas returned to winning ways on Saturday with a thrilling win against local rivals Welshpool.

Yappy’s miserable form with the coin continued as he lost the toss for the 5th consecutive time, and we were asked to bat on a dry but slow wicket by the home side.

A patient start built a platform for a magnificent 74 run 4th wicket partnership between Graham Ellis (39) and Ruch Nimantha which provided the impetus to carry Cae Glas to 170 for 7 in their 45 overs. Ruch finished on 76 having been caught in the penultimate over.

In reply, Welshpool wickets fell steadily with Ruch once again in the action returning figures of 4 for 43 from 2 spells of aggressive quick bowling. Yappy ably supported with 3 for 45 from his 15 overs.

A 74 run, 5th wicket partnership between Rob Pengelly (39), and John Gough (33) took the game down to the wire, but when Ruch (yes – him again!!) caught Gough low down by his ankles in the 40th over, leaving Welshpool on 165 for 9, it set the stage for a dramatic finale.

When two catches went down in Gaz’s final over with the score on 168, Cae Glas must have thought they’d lost their chance, but a tremendous one handed diving catch from Toothy at short mid wicket saved the day and Cae Glas took maximum points as they won by a mere 2 runs.
