11th May – Cae Glas v Fenns Bank

An early start and hard work by Cae Glas ground volunteers bore fruit on Saturday when they entertained local rivals Fenns Bank at Gatacre on Saturday. Torrential rain earlier in the week had left standing water in a number of areas, and the game doubtful, despite the better weather. Things didn’t start to well when skipper Pete Bowyer lost the toss on what was inevitably a slow wicket and outfield. Nevertheless ex skipper George Candler marked his return with a carefully constructed 24, before some magnificent big hitting from Matt Coulson at the end left him stranded on 48 not out as Cae Glas posted 110 for 8 in their 40 overs. Tom Lee being the pick of the Fenns Bank attack taking 4 for 19 in his 12 overs. In reply, Fenns found runs just as hard to come by against the Cae Glas opening attack and wickets fell steadily. Only Tom Wynn (18) and Graham Bennington(16) reaching double figures as the visitors held on for a losing draw on 82 for 8, with the last pair at the wicket. Gary Davies bowled well for the hosts taking 3 for 13 in his 12 overs with the ever reliable Nick Broabent (2 for 16) and Gaz Edgerton (2 for 20), weighing in with a brace of wickets a piece
