League leaders, Market Drayton II were the visitors to Gatacre this week to take on the seconds who remain in a rich vein of form.
Having been asked to bat, a couple of early setbacks were weathered successfully. What followed was a wonderful partnership of 116 between Pete Bowyer (62) and Gavin Porritt (47) for the fourth wicket, that carried us to 206 for 8 from our 45 overs. Bradlee Webb took 3 for 37 for the visitors.
In reply, Drayton looked to be cruising to victory at 51 without loss, but when the opening partnership was broken, wickets began to tumble and two outfield catches then proved crucial: the first by veteran Andy Kemp to dismiss James Connolly (53) and the second by Aidan Martyn to remove the dangerous Gavin Fox. The latter was taken within a metre of the boundary – but the catch was taken cleanly and a collective sigh of relief was heard around the ground!
In the end Drayton collapsed to 143 all out in the 38th over, man-of-the-match Gavin Porritt (4 for 66) being the chief destroyer and skipper Barry Vaughan (3 for 25) providing some telling – and cunning – variation to the home attack. George Candler added two more catches to his growing collection behind the stumps. Mention must also be made of the tireless Shaun Southern with yet another luckless spell of bowling, but who nevertheless conceded only 37 runs from 15 tight overs .
