Fourth bottom Cae Glas II entertained second bottom Allscott II at Gatacre on Saturday in a Reserve League Two basement battle. The match ended in a closely fought draw, a result that did little to boost either side’s fight to retain their league status.
The visitors were asked to bat first and, after a quickfire start, might have been slightly disappointed to be pegged back to finish on 142 for 6 from their 40 overs. Opener and skipper Richard Addison hit 42 and Shaun Southern produced a miserly spell of bowling, conceding only 28 runs from 15 overs, but unluckily being the only home bowler to finish without a wicket.
In reply, The Glas got off to a measured start, but, after drinks, picked up the run-rate and were well placed needing 24 off the last 5 overs with six wickets remaining. Alas, despite the best efforts of a depleted middle-order line-up, clever captaincy and bowling from Allscott left them 5 runs short of their target, finishing on 137 for 7. The ever-dependable Pete Bowyer top-scored with 54 and there were also excellent supporting knocks from Aled Roberts (23) and the evergreen Andy Kemp (20).
Cae Glas 9 points, Allscott 11 points.
